The Prodigal Son: A Story of Two Brothers

The Parable of the Prodigal Son is perhaps Jesus' most famous story. While we often focus on the younger son who wastes his inheritance, the story is actually a masterpiece of three distinct characters: the younger brother, the older brother, and the father.

The Grace of the Father

The father’s reaction to the returning son is scandalous by ancient standards. Instead of waiting for an apology, he runs to meet him. It is a visual representation of grace—unearned, overwhelming, and restorative.

The Trap of the Elder Brother

The story ends with the older brother refusing to join the party. He is angry because he "obeyed the rules" and feels the grace shown to his brother is unfair. His struggle reminds readers that self-righteousness can be just as isolating as rebellion.

An Open Ending

Jesus leaves the story unfinished. We don't know if the older brother ever went inside. The parable serves as a mirror, asking the listener: Which brother are you today? And are you ready to accept the father's invitation?
